The foundation of health is how well you care for the body in which you live*.
Get a start on attaining optimal health by following these five guidelines to healing your body and staying healthy.
Your body can only use what you feed it to operate. If you feed your body junk, then junk will be the body’s only fuel. If your body is filled with healthy good nutrition, you will have strong building blocks upon which you can grow and function.
Did you ever wonder why sodas are so sweet? There are approximately 6-8 teaspoons of sugar in every cup of every soft drink, and phosphoric acid** must be added to the drink so that the rush of sugar entering our blood stream doesn’t cause us to throw it up.
Sodas are made with large amounts of sugar because the flood of sugar gives your brain a high. In the presence of caffeine, sugar mimics the effect of cocaine on the brain. The heavy concentration of sugar in soda actually makes you more thirsty. After approximately two hours there’s a rapid decline of sugar in the brain and…voila – you need another soda! The prevalence of sugar in the soda industry can be compared to legalized substance abuse.
You may opt instead for a caffeine free drink with artificial sweeteners such as, Splenda, Sucralose, NutraSweet, and Aspartame. What could be bad? The high level of sweetness reminds you of the sugary drink without the effect on the brain, which creates a further craving for sweets. In addition, the soda is still a supersaturated beverage which only makes you more thirsty. To make matters worse, NutraSweet, Splenda etc. are also neurotoxins, which means that they damage brain and nervous tissue. This is a triple whammy for addiction!

Taking Your Vitamins
It should come as no surprise to anyone that to get the full compliment of nutrition from our diet is difficult, if not impossible. Therefore you must supplement your diet with vitamins, preferably a milti-vitamin. Some considerations to keep in mind when choosing a muiti-vitamin are: men from the age of 21 on up and women after menopause (unless they are anemic) should never take iron. Everyone needs extra vitamin C and Vitamin D. You can consult with your doctor to learn more.
Vigorous exercise doesn’t only make you look good and feel good, it helps prevent Alzheimer’s, depression, arthritis, heart disease, cancer, complications of pregnancy, and much of the decline felt with aging. There are two key parts to exercising:
- It should be consistent and regular.
- It should be vigorous. Taking a stroll around the block is very nice, but in order to achieve health benefits, you will need to walk vigorously to the point where your heartbeat increases, you get short of breath and begin to sweat. You don’t have to exercise a lot, but 20-30 minutes a day of brisk walking, i.e. two miles in a half hour or less, done at least three times a week will give you a significant modicum of exercise.
There are many forms of exercise. The key is to safely do what you enjoy: dancing, bike riding, weight lifting, aerobics, jumping rope, hiking, skating, swimming, etc. It is important to enjoy exercise and equally important not to injure yourself through overexertion.
Adequate rest means waking in the morning refreshed, having no need to take a nap (although sometimes a 10-minute rest can be quire refreshing) nor drink caffeine to stay awake. For most adults 6-8 hours a night is enough. If you need more than 8 hours, it is important to see your doctor, because you may have a medical problem. If you get less than 4 hours, you will soon develop a medical problem.
Rest is very important because all repair of the body, mind and soul occurs during sleep. While you sleep, reparative hormones peak, overworked muscles rejuvenate, and your mind recuperates and solidifies the knowledge it gained through that day.
Getting adequate rest also means taking vacations. Vacations are necessities, not luxuries. Ideally, everyone needs two vacations a year. After vacations people are rejuvenated, healthier, more energetic, and generally happier. People who take adequate vacations don’t get sick as often, don’t get injured as often, are more productive, and are generally happier people.
Obtaining adequate rest enriches our lives at home and at work, enhances brain function, and improves memory and mood. Most people think that by working harder and longer we get more done, when in actuality that is not the case. Years ago the military studied productivity and efficiency in soldiers and found that when soldiers were given adequate rest and break times, a soldier working 8 hours a day accomplished more than one working 12-16 hours a day. Rested soldiers were also less prone to injuries, illness and sick leave.

*Be forewarned, there are exceptions to these rules! For example, we all know or know of someone who smoked for more than 60 years and is as healthy as can be with no lung disease or heart disease. This does not mean that smoking is safe, it just means that there are some people who can get away with it. Imagine how healthy they could be if they did not smoke!
**The phosphoric acid rots your teeth, weakens your bones, and facilitates the movement of sugar into your bloodstream.
